Timber floors can be re-sanded or re-coated several times, including changing the appearance by changing the product used including water base polyurethane, solvent base polyurethane, staining and oil-based products.
Recycled Timber Flooring
Recycled timber flooring is the process of salvaging timber flooring from existing homes and buildings, the process is unique and varies according to supplier.
Recycled timber is popular for many different reasons, most commonly expressed by clients, is that the old growth colour and characteristics cannot be matched by plantation timber. Another reason is when houses that already have old growth timber are renovated or extended, old growth or recycled timber will best match when sanded and polished. Using plantation timber where old growth timber is already present may be dissimilar.
Timber Floor Repairs and Restoration
Timber flooring damage can vary from white ant intrusion, water or moisture entry and dents or scratches caused from heavy objects with sharp corners.
Repairs to damaged timber boards are common and, in many cases, a damaged board can easily be removed and replaced fully coated.
Things to consider for floor board repairs:
- Natural timber comes in several thicknesses and widths. The most common timber floor size is 80 x 13mm, however 130 x 14mm has become increasing more popular. Not all species are available in 80 x 13mm or 130 x 14mm due to milling restrictions and cost
- Janka Rating is the scale that is used to categorise a hardness to a species. The softer the timber the lower the rating and the harder the timber the higher the rating.
These factors need to be considered and would be discussed in an initial consultation either over the phone or in person so that the best decision can be made.
